Is there any one piece of technology you couldn't live without? (Discussion)

What sorts of technology do you have readily available in your classrooms? At our school, we have at least 2 computers and an LCD projector per classroom.

Knowing what you have and/or use, is there one piece that you couldn’t live without? Is there a piece of technology that you find absolutely invaluable in your classroom? Why? How does it benefit students?

From my own perspective, I use the LCD projector in my classroom extensively. It is especially helpful for those ‘teachable moments’ where students might need to see what a ‘stingray’ is or see a quick instructional video on the importance of thrust to flight. This is especially helpful in a classroom such as mine that has a very high ESL population. These moments can provide minimal experiences where they might otherwise be lacking.

Based on my experience working with a wide variety of teachers – both elementary and secondary – I would suggest that beyond those computers and projectors, the single best “can’t live without” would have to be the interactive whiteboard. Time and again, once teachers learn the basic use of and start integrating the interactive whiteboard (be it Smartboard, Promethian, Polycom, etc) they become immediately immersed and begin tying their curriculum directly to the equipment. So seeing that the interactive whiteboard is just a whiteboard without the computer and projector, here’s my ranking:

    1. Computer (obviously) 2. Digital projector (a nice BRIGHT one) 3. Interactive Whiteboard (I prefer Smart and Promethian brands, but your milage may vary)

In my high school, we have at least the above in ALMOST every classroom. I think within four years every single classroom will have access to this technology.

Hello everyone this is a great site because this summer I plan to enroll in a Master’s Education program with the University of Phoenix and I would love to ask questions on the concepts I will be learning.
